OLA Announces the Cancellation of Traditional Box Lacrosse Season

The OLA has announced the cancellation of regularly-scheduled box lacrosse programming in 2020.

"We have held out hope until now because that's what we believe our members would expect of us," said OLA President Marion Ladouceur. "In prioritizing the health and safety of our members, we recognize that it is unlikely that box lacrosse can be played in what we have traditionally known as our regular season. We regret that the players, coaches, officials, parents and fans won’t get to enjoy what was certain to be an exciting season of action, but it is important for us to be realistic. We agree that it is appropriate to shift our focus towards outdoor opportunities and alternative program formats with recommendations from our Return to Activity / Return to Play Committee. We look forward to sharing the results of these discussions with everyone when it is appropriate to do so. Keep those sticks in your hands."

COVID-19 UPDATE and CANCELLATION NOTICE

COVID-19 Update and Cancellation Notice for 2020 Lacrosse

All members of the community are dealing with the evolving situation of COVID-19, and as a lacrosse family it presents us with many uncertainties for our association and membership here in St. Catharines.

The SCMLA exists as an organization to provide an opportunity for young boys and girls in St. Catharines to experience the game of lacrosse. Most importantly, we aim to provide those opportunities in a safe and welcoming environment, with the health of all of our members as our ultimate priority. Current events have led the SCMLA Board to make the difficult decision to cancel a number of our minor programs in 2020, and in some cases, that decision was made by a governing body at an even earlier date. Below is our update on the summer season for each and every one of our minor programs.

BOYS FIELD

For the summer of 2020, the OMFLL has made the decision to cancel the spring season. The information on this cancellation can be found here. The OMFLL is currently investigating the possibility of late summer/early fall field season if possible. Further information will be provided as it becomes available. Refunds for those currently registered for the spring season will be provided by May 31, 2020, as outlined on our refund page, found https://www.scmla.ca/page/show/3224333-documents

HOUSE LEAGUE

Given the closure of community facilities over the next few months, there will be no house league offered for the 2020 summer season. The season was to have begun this weekend, and the limited opportunities and dates would simply not allow any offering to be equivalent to what families signed up for originally. This includes our soft lacrosse program that was being offered free of charge in 2020. We will be looking to provide all of the same programming in the summer of 2021, and hope to see all of you return. Refunds for those currently registered for our house league program will be provided by May 31, 2020, as outlined on our refund page, found https://www.scmla.ca/page/show/3224333-documents

BOYS & GIRLS REP

Currently the OLA has yet to make a decision on the 2020 season. The SCMLA has no access to city-owned and operated facilities until July 1, 2020 (at the earliest). This date is subject to change based on the current situation. We will be in communication with all of our membership via email, our website, and social media when information has been provided to us by the OLA. Information on our policies for refunds can be found https://www.scmla.ca/page/show/3224333-documents . Our annual Legends of Lacrosse tournament, held in late May/early June each year, has been cancelled by the OLA, with no ‘makeup’ date for 2020.

GIRLS FIELD

Currently the OWFL has yet to make a decision on the 2020 season. Access by the SCMLA to the necessary facilities to play and practice is currently in question. We will be in communication with all of our membership via email, our website, and social media when information has been provided to us by the OWFL. Information on our policies for refunds can be found https://www.scmla.ca/page/show/3224333-documents

OLA COVID-19 UPDATE APRIL 9th.

OLA Update Regarding COVID-19 (April 9th)

Written Apr 9

As a further follow up to the Ontario Lacrosse Association announcement on March 13, 2020 regarding an immediate pause on sanctioned events and activities, and in light of ongoing developments and legislation, the OLA is prepared to continue the postponement of in-person lacrosse activities until May 15th, as announced in today's directive:

COVID-19 Directive, March 30th

The Ontario Lacrosse Association, in consultation with its Board of Directors, have been monitoring the most recent developments with COVID-19 and the ongoing public health emergency, and are currently assessing next steps for the 2020 season. We remain optimistic as we continue to model multiple Return-To-Play action plans based on a number of scenarios, although we recognize that there is not a uniform direction available as it relates to municipal sports at this point.

At this time, the OLA is also asking teams and associations at all divisions of play to actively communicate with their association members by posting this directive to their website, sharing it to their registered members via email, and using social media. We have received a variety of inquiries from participants and parents requesting information contained within our directives and the FAQs listed below. It is critical for all leagues and zones to keep their members informed during these challenging times using links to the information provided by the OLA.

Wishing you good health and safety while we work together to get through this difficult time. Further information will be communicated when it is available.

Frequently Asked Questions

(Last Updated: April 9th, 2020)

To our valued players, parents, club representatives and leagues:

Please review the frequently asked questions and responses below addressing the 2020 OLA season during the ongoing COVID-19 health emergency. This section will continue to be updated with additional questions and answers as they becomes available. As a guiding principle: it is time is to plan, not to panic. Planning together throughout this situation will ensure the best possible outcome. It is important to remember that we are all in this together.

Will there be a lacrosse season in 2020?

No one wants a lacrosse season more than us! As soon as it is safe and appropriate to proceed, OLA leagues will be granted approval to begin operating with modifications that ensure lacrosse is played in 2020. Currently, the Province of Ontario is under an Emergency Order and has closed all recreational facilities, including arenas and sports fields until at least May 4th. This closure may be extended if necessary; some municipalities have extended their facility closures past May 4th. We continue to monitor this situation through the Ministry of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries and the Ontario Ministry of Health in order to plan for the eventual lifting of restrictions.

How can I access the most up-to-date information from the OLA related to the 2020 season?

The OLA’s established communication practice is to publish information related to all programming on our website while simultaneously directing league commissioners and representatives to disseminate information within their sectors. Up-to-date information will always be included in this section of our website as it becomes available.

House league lacrosse typically operates between April and June. Should clubs cancel their house league seasons or modify their schedules based on the fluidity of the current situation?

Clubs will need to make this decision based on their local circumstances. The OLA believes in the value of house league programs in providing local, recreational opportunities for players to develop a love of the game, and we strongly encourage clubs to accommodate house league schedules later into the summer when it is safe and appropriate to return to play.

If the minor box season is modified and some tournaments are cancelled, will the OLA consider expanding remaining tournaments to help teams get the necessary number of games for the purposes of meeting their ratings requirement?

At this point, it is too early for this question to be answered. The first weekend of tournaments (May 24th; Innisfil, Newmarket and Peterborough) are currently cancelled. The OLA is committed to being flexible to both host associations and registered teams when determining the next steps related to the scheduling of invitational tournaments once additional information becomes available.

For tournaments that are cancelled, will the approved tournament hosts be automatically granted hosting privileges in 2021? Could these tournaments maintain their list of accepted teams for the next season?

Based on the variability of team registrations and schedules from year-to-year, the usual procedures related to tournaments will apply. A new application process will be opened in the fall, and associations may request hosting privileges for the 2021 season in the usual manner. Hosting tournaments are not permitted to hold spots for teams for the following season.

What will happen to minor team ratings?

Once the OLA has determined the starting date for the 2020 season, revised timelines and deadlines will be announced that correspond with ensuring that accurate ratings are calculated in advance of the provincial championships, as determined by the OLA’s Board of Directors.

What will happen to levies due as part of OLA fee schedule?

Adjustments to the OLA fee schedule (both deadline dates and amounts) will be determined in conjunction with revisions made to the OLA operating budget. Specific details will be circulated as more information becomes available.

What will happen to the Ontario Summer Games?

The Ontario Summer Games committee is currently planning to host this event as previously announced. At this point, the OLA intends to enter teams into competition in both male and female categories under our existing agreement with the Ontario Summer Games, subject to change as the event approaches and more information becomes available.

My question hasn’t been answered here. How can I ask it?

There are a number of questions that have been raised by multiple stakeholders which won’t have immediate or clear answers at this point. The OLA Board of Directors is engaged in ongoing consideration each week based on a number of factors and provided guidance. Clubs should address any questions to their league commissioner or zone director to be filtered through the OLA Board of Directors for discussion. As answers become available or the situation changes, updates will be made to this section of the website.

*COVID-19 UPDATE*

The OLA COVID-19 Directive is officially in effect.

Effective immediately, sanctioned in-person lacrosse activities are now placed on hold until further notice.

As this is an on-going and changing situation, we will update often.

Keep your sticks in your hands!

Niagara Lacrosse League FAQ

Niagara Lacrosse League – F.A.Q.

What is the Niagara Lacrosse League?

The five (5) local non-profit minor lacrosse clubs in the Niagara Region have joined forces during COVID-19 to offer our members a truly unique lacrosse opportunity. The goal of the Niagara Lacrosse League is to provide players with an opportunity to play lacrosse and compete close to home at an affordable price.

What is the Niagara Lacrosse League’s refund policy?

The schedule of one practice and one scrimmage per week can occur if the Niagara Region is in the Yellow, Green or Orange zone. If we are in the Red zone, then scrimmages will be replaced with practices. If we are in the Grey zone, then all activities will likely be cancelled. There will be no refunds unless Niagara Region goes into the Grey/Lockdown zone for multiple weeks. Each local club will keep a minimum of $75 for money paid out for your child’s insurance and uniform costs. Other costs will be refunded on pro-rated basis if field time is cancelled due to the Niagara Region being in the Grey/Lockdown zone.

How much is registration?

Registration is $250 for U9 and above. Registration is $125 for U7 and below. Kids that qualify for U7 and below will need to register for U9 and select cash or cheque as their payment option. Once registration is approved, those U7 players can e-transfer their $125 to the appropriate club.

What rules will the Niagara Lacrosse League follow?

The Niagara Lacrosse League is a hybrid of both box and field lacrosse. All practices and scrimmages will occur outdoors and use six-foot nets. Scrimmages will be 5v5 or 7v7 utilizing a small side of a football field. Long poles will be utilized at older age groups, however, stick skills using short sticks will be the emphasis at younger age groups.

Does my child have to tryout?

No. But there are limited spots at each age group, so we encourage you to register asap.

Will my child be teamed up with their friends from our local club?

No. Players will be distributed amongst the teams based on skill to ensure league competitiveness. Where your child is from will have no influence on the team they are assigned.

Where will the practices and scrimmages occur?

At this time, all playing sessions will occur on the turf fields at AN Myer Secondary School and Westlane Secondary School in Niagara Falls.

When will these practices and scrimmages take place?

At this time, we have turf field time scheduled on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings. U5 and U7 will train once per week on Monday or Wednesday. U9 and older will practice once per

week on Monday or Wednesday, and scrimmage on Fridays. The season will run from mid-May to mid-August.

Can girls play in the NLL?

Yes. Girls can register for the Niagara Lacrosse League similarly to how they can play in the Ontario Minor Field Lacrosse League (OMFLL). St. Catharines Minor Lacrosse Association will be also running a field lacrosse house league for girls only. Please visit www.SCMLA.ca for further details on their girls only program.

What equipment will be required?

Contact during play will be limited as outlined on the Ontario Lacrosse Association’s Return to Play guide ( https://ontariolacrosse.com/administration/covid-19 ), however full equipment will still be required.

Are spectators allowed to attend practices and scrimmages?

Per the OLA’s Return to Play guide, 100 spectators will be allowed when the Niagara Region is in Green and Yellow zone; and 1 parent or guardian per participant will be allowed when the Niagara Region is in Orange and Red zone.

2020 Refund Information

REFUND INFORMATION – 2020

Refunds will begin to be provided immediately to all registered members of the association for boys field lacrosse, and our house league program. We are waiting for provincial direction on our boys & girls box lacrosse rep (travel) seasons, in addition to our girls field program – which has a later start date. Our goal was to return the maximum dollars to our members, recognizing the difficulties and hardships placed upon all of you in the current climate.

The refund will be for 90% of the original registration fee, with a 10% holdback to minimize losses incurred as a result of the cancelled season(s).

If you paid by credit card, the refund will be processed back to the same card. If you paid by etransfer or cheque, we will mail a cheque to you at the address in Sportzsoft. We are planning to provide these refunds during the month of May, 2020. Please allow until May 31, 2020 before enquiring about non-receipt of a refund.

There is a portion of your registration fee to SCMLA ($21 per registration) that is deducted from our account immediately by the OLA to cover a number of items, including OLA Insurance, OLA Magazine, Registration Software and the OLA Registrar. We have no ability to negotiate the applicability of these fees and do not have the ability, nor access, to reimburse them. In addition, there are OLA banking fees to process credit card payments and refunds, on top of SCMLA operational expenses that we continue to cover (website, storage rental, banking fees, insurance).

The 10% holdback is necessary for the SCMLA to remain financial viable and to continue operations for future seasons.

This is not our preferred solution. We are incurring significant operating losses in the payment of the fees mentioned above (even with the holdback). In addition to the fees ($11,000), we have approximately $20,000 in expenses related to the upcoming season that have already been incurred (jerseys, shorts, house league equipment, lacrosse balls, etc.), and we are committed to covering those expenses as well.

We are thankful for your patience during this time, and understanding of any questions you may have. Should you have questions, please view the electronic contact information for our Executive here, and direct any general queries to the President or Vice-President, with specific questions surrounding registration and/or refunds to the Registrar or Treasurer.
